The pretty harbour town of Kirkcudbright was once the county town of the former county of Kirkcudbrightshire, in the south of Scotland, which is now the county of Dumfries and Galloway. The name of the town derives from the earlier form of "Kilcudbrit", which is from the Scottish Gaelic "Cille Chuithbeirt", meaning "Chapel of Cuthbert", in reference to an Anglo-Saxon saint whose remains were held in the town for seven years between his exhumation and re-interment at Chester-le-Street, in County Durham.
Attractions in the town include MacLellan's Castle, which was built in 1582 on the site of a former monastery; the 17th century Tolbooth, which once imprisoned the American Captain, John Paul Jones, who was born in neighbouring Kirkbean; and the Stewartry Museum, which contains a range of collections relating to the history of the area, including Britain's earliest surviving sporting trophy, the "Siller Gun".
