Kirkby Thore

"Kirkby Thore" refers to both a small village and the hill it is on, in the popular tourist region of Cumbria, in England. This is a quieter part of Cumbria, perhaps because the area is a new addition to the county, being formally the ancient county of Westmorland that was merged with Cumbria only recently, in 1974. As such, it is often overlooked — much to the delight of the holiday-maker seeking the beauty and tranquillity of the aptly named Upper Eden.

The village was once the Roman cavalry camp of Bravoniacum, and numerous artifacts, including Roman coins, sandals, urns, tombstones,earthen vessels, and weaponry have been discovered in the local area. The Maiden Way Roman connected the fort to another fort at Magnis (Carvoran) on Hadrian's Wall, and can still be traced through some of its route.

Kirkby Thore is a close neighbour of the ancient market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, and the much larger town of Penrith is also only 8 miles away. This village offers the advantage of close proximity to the Lake District National Park as well as the Cumbrian Pennines, from a quaint and relaxing base.
