The market town of Kingsbridge in the attractive county of Devon lies on the Kingsbridge Estuary amidst the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A settlement grew here around a bridge built before the 10th century and by the 12th century the town had its Market Charter. Prosperity was evident in Kingsbridge in the late 18th century when the town mills were converted into a productive woollen manufactory and in the 19th century with the large monthly cattle market. The heritage is evident in many of the buildings and architecture in the town, including the 16th Shambles and the town’s museum that was originally a grammar school founded in 1670.
Kingsbridge offers visitors a good choice of amenities and shops, pubs, restaurants and eateries as well as plenty to see, do and enjoy in the local area. Walkers and those with a love of outdoor activities are well catered for with lovely walks across rolling hills, wooded river valleys and moorland. Local cultural attractions include galleries and exhibitions, vibrant craft markets, live music on the band-stand and open-air theatre too. Each year the town celebrates with a music festival in June and a popular fair in July.
