Kenilworth is a town at the heart of the county of Warwickshire and home to the magnificent Kenilworth Castle. This is also where the first potato was grown in England. The town was developed around the abbey and castle that were constructed soon after the Norman conquest of 1066. King John created the Great Mere, an enormous man-made lake that helped fortify the castle and later, Henry V built an isolated pleasure house known as the Pleasaunce on the far side. In 1649, during the English Civil war, Kenilworth Castle was destroyed and the great mere drained away by Oliver Cromwell's forces. Today it is well cared for by English Heritage and is regarded as the largest and finest ruined castle in England. It is open to visitors throughout the year and hosts a number of events.
The town of Kenilworth is spread over two areas; the old and new parts of the town that are separated by Abbey Fields park. Picturesque and charming, Old Kenilworth has narrow winding lanes and pretty thatched cottages, whilst the new part of Kenilworth offers a more vibrant culture with a lively night-life, choice of great restaurants and theatres.
