Jedburgh is a town and former royal burgh in the Scottish Borders, and within the historic boundaries of the Scottish council area of Roxburghshire. Jedburgh is situated close the the English Border, on the Jed Water, which is a tributary of the River Teviot. It is overlooked by the substantial ruins of Jedburgh Abbey, which is a popular tourist attraction for the town, along with Mary, Queen of Scots' House and Jedburgh Castle Jail, which is now a museum.
Jedburgh is the place where Scottish king Malcolm IV died in 1165, aged only 24 as a result of excessive religious fasting, and where King Alexander III was married, at the abbey in 1285. It is also very close to the location where in the 18th century, the father of modern geology, James Hutton, discovered what is now known as the Hutton Unconformity, where layers of vertical sedimentary rock are covered by newer horizontal layers of red sandstone.
