Jarrow is a moderately sized town on the River Tyne, at the border of County Durham and Tyne & Wear in North East England. It is built on the site of a 1st century Roman fort named Gyruum, which was then occupied by the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century. Gyrwum translates as "the marsh dwellers", referring to the lowland area as it was.
Jarrow is home to the Monkwearmouth-Jarrow Priory, which is a World Heritage Site that was once the home of the Venerable Bede, or Saint Bede, best known for the text The Ecclesiastical History of the English People and for the translation of the Gospel of John into Old English. "Bede's World" is a working museum dedicated to the life and times of Bede, which is located beside the priory.
Other well-known attractions of the county include Auckland Castle, Barnard Castle and the Bowes Museum, Durham Cathedral and Castle (a World Heritage Site), the Durham Dales, the High Force and Low Force waterfalls of the River Tees, and Raby Castle.
