Lewis is the northern portion of the island of Lewis and Harris, which is the largest island of the Outer Hebrides archipelago of northern Scotland. It was once within the Norse Kingdom of Mann and is rich in cultural heritage, with a good number of myths and legends to wonder at.
Lewis covers an area of 683 square miles and is mostly lower lying than Harris, which is quite mountainous. Lewis has the only town of the island, which is Stornoway, where the majority of the population of the Western Isles lives. The island's various conservation areas are home to a diverse assortment of plant and animal life, including the golden eagle, red deer and seals.
