Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk, in southern England. It is located on the estuary of the River Orwell where the River Gipping meets the tide. The name of the town is a derivative of its medieval form of 'Gippeswick', which refers to the River Gipping, which has provided a natural inland trade route from the estuary since the Roman rule of Britain, so aiding the growth of Ipswich into what is now one of the largest towns on the East Coast of England. Felixstowe, Harwich and Colchester are some of the neighbouring towns of the area, which is a particularly historically and culturally rich region of the country that is very popular with tourists. Much of that history is documented in the Ipswich Museum.
Ipswich is a very popular place to visit, due partly to its location at the centre of such an intriguing part of England. Holiday makers to the town can enjoy a variety of watersports and boat trips along the Gipping and the Orwell, as well as the amusements, restaurants and marinas of the newly regenerated waterfront, and the walks and tours of the landmarks and beauty spots of the local area.
