Ingatestone is a small town in the county of Essex and is closely associated with the nearby village of Fryerning. Geologists and history lovers come to find the stones that the Saxons who settled here, named themselves after; "Ing-atte-Stone", meaning ‘the people at the stone’. Stone is not common here, making the town's stones an unusual feature that was deposited by glacial action. The stones are located close to the church with two boulders on either side of the junction at Fryerning Road. It is unknown whether a Saxon Church stood on this site but a small Norman Church was built between 1080 and 1100 and within two centuries, the settlement had grown into a medieval village with a market, two annual fairs and the need for a larger church.
With ample amenities, eateries, independent and specialist shops as well as historic sites and attractions, Ingatestone is a little town with a lot for the visitor to enjoy. The surrounding countryside is a delight for nature lovers, walkers and those with an interest in outdoor pursuits. Ingatestone Hall is well worth taking the time to explore and is open as a visitor attraction; with a range of antique furniture, paintings, and other historical artefacts. Queen Elizabeth I spent several nights at the Hall in 1561 and the Petre family continue to reside here as they have since the 16th century.
