The town of Ilminster in Somerset lies amidst the beautiful countryside of the Isle Valley and is named for the River Isle along with its large church of St. Mary. The Grade I listed church dates from the 15th century is built of hamstone and boasts some fascinating and historic features including; the Wadham tombs of Sir William Wadham and his mother, dated 1452 and Nicholas and Dorothy Wadham, dated 1609 and 1618. The church tower was added in the early 17th century and reaches two storeys, towering over Ilminster and ever-present.
Ilminster offers ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs and is a pretty place where most of the buildings, in common with the church, are built from hamstone. The surrounding area is popular with walkers and nature enthusiasts with outstanding views over the valley and the town being the reward for a walk up nearby Herne Hill. The market charter granted here around the 11th century is still of use as the market continues to be a vibrant weekly event.
