The large suburban town of Ilford in the county of Essex is a busy, bustling place that has grown from the compact village that is was in 1653. This once rural area saw a huge increase in population when the railways came in 1839 and again in 1921 with the building of new housing developments here. When the Central Line service of the London Underground began in 1947, the ease of commute to London again increased the popularity of this town as a place to live. More distant history records this place as where the only complete skull of a mammoth has been found in the United Kingdom. Unearthed in 1860 at a site on what is now the High Road, the skull is on display in the Natural History Museum.
Ilford has a great choice of shopping outlets, independent traders, specialist shops and shopping centres at its heart and is a significant commercial and retail centre that draws shoppers from far and wide. Traditional pubs, bars, a wealth of restaurants and eateries, parks and attractions give the visitor to Ilford, plenty to see, do and enjoy.
