Hythe

Hythe is a small market town situated between Romney Marsh and the coast of the English Channel in Kent. The name of the town is an Old English word referring to the settlement as a haven. Hythe is one of the five Cinque ports, along with Hastings, New Romney, Dover, and Sandwich — which were historically a series of commercially vital ports between England and France at the narrowest crossing point of the Channel.

The port has since silted up but the seafront of the town is now a popular tourist resort, complete with promenade. The town features a number of medieval and Georgian buildings and a Saxon church. The town hall was built in 1794 and has a feature fireplace that was designed by the Adam Brothers. Hythe has two castles: the now privately owned Saltwood Castle, and the medieval Lympne Castle, which is now mostly used as a venue for formal events.

Hythe offers excellent shopping and various activities such as horse riding, sailing, bowling, cricket, tennis, football and squash, while attractions of the wider area include the Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway, the Biddenden Vineyards and Cider Works and the Deal and Dover castles.
