The market town of Huntingdon in the county of Cambridgeshire is famed as the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell and associations with other key political figures. Hinchingbrooke House here has been home to the Cromwell's, then the Montagu's, and The Earls of Sandwich and where in 1660 Samuel Pepys was secretary to Edward Montagu. History and legend blend here and nowhere more so than at Hinchingbrooke House. A former convent, it is said to be haunted by its former inhabitants and one nun has even gone forth to haunt ‘Nun’s Bridge’ over the Alconbury Brook. Legend speaks of the murder of the nun and the lover.
From its picturesque position here on the north bank of the River Great Ouse, Huntingdon offers the delights of the town and the sights of the countryside that surround it. There are over 150 properties listed as being of Special Architectural or Historic Interest in Huntingdon just waiting to be explored. Out on the river, visitors enjoy the natural beauty of its Riverside Park; with its attractive vistas of Westside Common, the former mill and the old stone bridge dating back to 1332. It has six arches and is considered to be one of the finest medieval bridges still left in England today.
