Hunstanton

Hunstanton is a picturesque seaside town in the county of Norfolk that has been a popular coastal resort since the 1860’s when Henry Styleman Le Strange chose to develop the area as a sea-bathing resort. He helped to fund the construction of a railway line to the town in order to encourage visitors; that went on to become one of the most consistently profitable railway companies in the country. The ancient village cross was moved from Old Hunstanton to the new site in 1848 as the area continued to develop and the first building here was the Royal Hotel that overlooks the magnificent sloping green to the sea. Alone for some years on the landscape, it was created by William Butterfield, the renowned Victorian architect and friend of Le Strange. The architect and developer went on to create a beautifully designed seaside resort town and much of the charm, structure and heritage of that original development, survives still.

Hunstanton retains its Victorian beauty and is a quintessential, English seaside resort, with a fairground, shopping area, traditional pubs, eateries, theatre, amusement arcades, a lovely long promenade and visitor attractions. There are colonies of grey seals on the sand bars of The Wash and boats are available to take visitors out to catch site of these lovely creatures.
