Huddersfield is a large English market town situated by the confluence of the rivers Colne and Holme in West Yorkshire, near the City of Bradford. Huddersfield was the birthplace of the rugby league and of the late British Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
The town is characterised by a predominance of Victorian architecture, with the third highest number of listed buildings of any town or city in the United Kingdom, including a Grade I listed railway station, which recently won the Europa Nostra award for European architecture. Another major landmark of the town is Castle Hill, which is the site of an Iron Age hill fort; although it is now better known for the impressive Victoria Tower, which features on New Zealand's Castle Wine label. The local area is believed to have been settled for over 4,000 years.
Huddersfield's key role in the Industrial Revolution equipped it with excellent transport links, intriguing architecture, and several navigable canals. There is a very large and varied high street stocked with a good range of both independent and chain stores, along with a choice of quality holiday accommodation and countless restaurants, coffee shops, clubs and pubs.
Popular local attractions include the National Coal Mining Museum; Eureka! The National Children's Museum; the Kirklees Light Railway, and the Manor Heath Park Jungle Experience.
