Houghton-Le-Spring

Houghton-le-Spring is part of the City of Sunderland with a history that is centred around the Norman church of St Michael and All Angels. In this church lies the tomb of Bernard Gilpin who died in 1583 and was known as the ‘Apostle of the North’ for his good works and evangelising. Bernard lived in an age of religious controversy and with which he refused to be involved.

Visitors to Houghton-le-Spring who come in October will be delighted by the popular Houghton Feast; an ancient festival that dates back to the 1100’s and is the oldest and most traditional yearly festival in the City of Sunderland. The Houghton Feast festival is a colourful and vibrant event that lasts for days and has fairground rides, traditional ox roasting, church events, a carnival parade, community events and fireworks.
