The large suburban town of Hornchurch in the county of Essex is where many aviators, air craft, ground crews and women auxiliaries were based as the first line of defence against aerial attack from Continental Europe in both World Wars; ‘First Things First’ was the motto given to RAF Hornchurch. In World War I the aviators flew from here in the BE2c, a plane made of wood and canvas, to take on the Dread Zeppelin threat and later, during the early years of World War II, Hornchurch reverberated with the growl of Rolls Royce Merlin Engines as Spitfires took off to fight over the beaches of Dunkirk. It was agriculture though that created the town of Hornchurch until other industries took over with the Industrial Revolution.
A combination of residential and commercial areas makes up Hornchurch and there are excellent amenities and transport. With a number of shopping streets and the vast market town of Romford nearby, there is plenty of choice for the shopper. A variety of good restaurants offering cuisine from around the world, traditional pubs and modern bars as well as local and nearby historic sites and attractions are all available here.
