Honiton

The town of Honiton in the attractive county of Devon is amidst stunning natural scenery, bordering an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty both to the south and to the north. A small early settlement here grew to be an important stop on the ancient Fosse Way; the major Roman Road from Exeter to Lincoln. Prosperity, growth and development came and Honiton went on to become a flourishing market town, well known for its lace making and pottery. A catastrophic fire in the mid 18th century tragically destroyed most of the town’s houses and today we see a large number of the Georgian ones that replaced them.

Honiton continues to be a market town with the weekly markets held on Tuesdays and Saturdays along the High Street. The town has a good choice of eateries, amenities, pubs and shops including more than 20 antique shops. For a fascinating insight into Honiton’s past, the Allhallows Museum of Lace and Local Antiquities offers visitors exhibits and displays that tell of life and work here. The museum is housed in the 13th century Allhallows Chapel, thought to be the oldest surviving building in Honiton.
