Known as The Lourdes of Wales, the market town of Holywell (Treffynnon to the Welsh) is the fifth largest town in Flintshire, in North Wales. It is situated to the west of the estuary of the River Dee. It is named after St Winefride's Well, which is a holy well that is known to have been famous since the Roman era, and has been a site of pilgrimage since about 660 as the site where Saint Winefride was beheaded by Caradog who had attempted to rape her.
The town is located among a knot of pretty and historic towns and villages amid the famously beautiful landscape of the Welsh Valleys. There is a good choice of holiday accommodation and a number of both modern and traditional establishments at which to find a typically Welsh welcome and good entertainment, making Holywell and excellent vantage point from which to explore the sites and attractions of Flintshire.
