Hockley

The large village of Hockley in the county of Essex is mentioned in the Domesday Book when the main manor of ‘Hocheleia’ was owned by the royal Saxon abbey of St. Mary's, Barking. The small church of St. Peter and Paul has an unusual octagonal tower and stands on a high hill to the west of the village, offering magnificent views across the Crouch valley. Other historic sites here are the listed Victorian Spa Pump Room and the Plumberow Mount; a burial mount that was excavated in 1913. The excavators were disappointed with the results though, finding only broken Romano British pots and a Roman coin. The true purpose of this mysterious relic of Hockley's past remains a mystery to this day.

Hockley has excellent amenities, eateries, shopping, pubs and plenty for visitors to enjoy. The traditional village green hosts cricket games in the summer and bonfires on the 5th November and is at the heart of this community. At the edge of the village is Hockley Woods, which has long served the area as a resource for fuel and building material; some of which was used for the building of Southend pier. The woods were once divided amongst a number of owners with high earth banks, which can still be seen today.
