The historic market town of Hinckley in the county of Leicestershire was long known as "Tin 'At" and there are a few stories as to why; the most common of these is that one of the wandering sheep drovers bragged that he could drink a hat full of ale and the local landlord obliged by having the blacksmith make a tin hat for the purpose. Visitors today will see a tin hat atop the flag pole at the corner of Castle Street and Market Place. Hinckley prospered from the hosiery industry with the first framework knitting machine arriving in the 17th century and by the 19th century, Hinckley was an important centre for the industry and responsible for a large proportion of Britain's hosiery production. Hinckley can also claim to be the place where the Hanson Cab was invented and home to the Triumph Motorcycle company as well as one of the oldest Ford dealerships in the country, Paynes Garages that was established in 1907.
Amidst the scenic beauty of rural Leicestershire, Hinckley has amenities and shops, pubs and eateries and a vibrant market every Monday, Friday and Saturday as well as a Farmers Market each month. The Hinckley and District Museum is the place to start if you want to explore the rich history of the town. The museum is housed in a range of former framework knitters' cottages.
