The small town of Highbridge in Somerset lies at the edge of scenic Somerset Levels near the mouth of the River Brue and is thought to have been occupied since at least the Roman period. By the 14th century, a bridge was constructed to cross the river and it became and important crossing on the route from Bristol to the South West. Highbridge grew up about this crossing to become a thriving market and industrial town that flourished with the coming of the railways in the late 19th century.
Highbridge today is still a market town offering ample amenities in the town centre that is clustered around Market Street. The town retain much of its history in the buildings, many of which are listed or historic. St. John’s Church in Highbridge was built in 1856 due to the generosity of Mary Ann Ruscombe Poole who laid the foundation stone.
