Henfield

The large village of Henfield is found in the county of West Sussex, near where two branches of the River Adur meet before it flows on into the English Channel at Shoreham-by-Sea. The village was once home to Colonel Henry Bishop, who devised the first type of postmark ever used in England and known to collectors as a ‘Bishop mark’. The Colonel is buried in the Henfield churchyard; his story and more can be discovered at the Henfield Museum here. The objects exhibited range from early fossils and flint implements, through the Medieval and Tudor times, to the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods. There are also household objects and farm tools on display with a horse-drawn plough, together with a mid-Victorian pump outside.

Henfield is an attractive village with fine houses, a good choice of restaurants, independent shops and a Monday market. The Henfield Festival of Arts is a key date in the calendar; this summer festival offers a garden trail around Henfield as well as an art trail. Henfield is proud to be the home of one of the oldest cricket clubs in the world, dating back to 1771 and one of the oldest Scout groups in the country (1st Henfield), dating from 1907. To the south of the village is Woods Mill, a restored mill that is now the headquarters of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, with wonderful attractions including an extensive nature trail.
