The most southerly town in the UK is Helston in the scenic county of Cornwall, located right at the northern end of the Lizard Peninsula and on the banks of the River Cober. This is an ancient town that is amongst the oldest in the county; Helston history in its earliest years is not well documented but it is known to have been inhabited by Saxons around the 6th century. The Domesday Book makes mention of the town and a charter was granted in 1201. Before the River Cober here was cut off from the sea by Loe Bar in the 13th century there was a small port in Helston that traded in tin and copper.
There are ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs in Helston that attracts visitors who come to enjoy the wonderful scenery, lovely walks, dramatic coastlines and abundance of visitor, historic and cultural attractions in the area. Each year sees the colourful and popular Flora Day in early May when Helston hosts the Furry Dance. The day sees four dances, an array of costumes and the Helston Town Band playing as the dancers travel around the town. The origins of the dance are unclear but are thought to be a pre-Christian celebration of the passing of winter.
