Helmsdale

Helmsdale is coastal village of Scotland. It is located in the east of the county of Sutherland, in the Scottish Highlands. It is a relatively modern settlement, in the location of an original fishing settlement on the River Helmsdale, that was created to re-home the displaced communities of the 1814 Highland Clearances. It became one of the largest herring fleets in Europe.

The town offers an excellent base from which to explore the sites, beaches and beauty of the Scottish Highlands, with rail connection by the Far North Line, an inn and a youth hostel, a heritage centre, an art gallery, and a choice of pubs and restaurants.

Attractions in the area include Laidhay Croft Museum, Dunrobin Castle, the Hugh Miller Museum and Birthplace Cottage, and
Elgin Cathedral.
