In the county of East Sussex, Heathfield is a small market town with a big responsibility; local legend tells that England would enjoy no spring at all without glad tidings by the old woman of Heffle Fair. She carries a basket hanging from her arm and during the day she opens it to let the cuckoo fly out to tell all of England that winter has finished, spring is at the full and summer is on the way. Locals are still said to hear the cuckoo at the Heffle Cuckoo Fair each April. Prosperity of the commercial kind was brought to Heathfield by Wealden iron during the 16th and 17th centuries and many of the cannon balls fired in war came from Heathfield. With the arrival of the railway in 1880, the town thrived; the old, disused trackbed is now named the Cuckoo Trail and is part of the National Cycle Network.
Heathfield is located on one of the main ridges of the High Weald in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounding the town with picturesque views and a wealth of opportunity to enjoy outdoor pursuits. The town centre has a distinctly Victorian and Edwardian character that blends with modern amenities, eateries, attractions and good shopping.
