The town of Haywards Heath is in close proximity to both London and the channel, in the attractive countryside of the county of West Sussex. The sweeping hills of the South Downs to the south, Ashdown Forest to the east and High Weald in the north, put this town at the heart of breathtaking scenery. Haywards Heath is recorded in 1642 in the English Civil War records as being where Sir Edward Ford advanced with Royalist troops towards Lewes from Chichester and was defeated. The settlement here flourished with the arrival of the London & Brighton Railway in 1841 that brought with it the visitors and eventually, the commuters.
A bustling place today, Haywards Heath has a modern shopping centre, plenty of independent shops as well as popular high street stores in the main shopping area running through the centre of the town. There is a great choice of restaurants, pubs and bars too on the South Road as well as the roads at either end of it. The town celebrates its setting with pretty tree-lined pavements, lovely parks and open spaces, hanging baskets and flower-filled tubs, all enhancing its character and charm.
