Hayling Island is a true island off the south coast of England, in the county of Hampshire. It is salt production that contributed to the development here on the island from around the 11th century until the late 19th century. With a long recorded history, Hayling Island can claim to be the home of one of the oldest Yew trees in Britain. The ancient Yew tree in St. Mary's Church yard is believed to be well over a thousand years old and has a girth of some nine metres. Oysters have been fished on the Hayling Oysterbeds since Roman times and became a delicacy that was exported throughout the country. In 1996, the oyster beds were restored, creating a wildlife haven which has become an important seabird breeding site. The Design Council awarded this project 'Millennium Product' status for the renovation.
Hayling Island may be a small island but with a combination of rural and marine environments, has much for the visitor to explore and enjoy. Unique natural history and bio-diversity abound and with over 3 miles of beaches, the outdoors is the biggest attraction. Hayling Island caters to visitors of all kinds, whether on land or at sea with a windsurfing and sailing centre, a funfair situated at Beachlands and the East Hayling Light Railway which runs from the funfair to Eastoke corner.
