The small coastal town and port of Hayle in the scenic county of Cornwall lies at the mouth of the Hayle River where it joins St. Ives Bay. Hayle grew from a small settlement started around the Bronze Age, to become an industrial powerhouse during the 18th and 19th centuries; with its port serving Cornwall's prosperous mining industry. Harvey's Foundry was built here and was producing the largest steam engines ever built and exporting worldwide. The rich industrial heritage of Hayle is honoured and part of the UNESCO Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.
Visitors to Hayle today will find a more tranquil place amidst diverse, breathtaking scenery with a wealth of surrounding natural beauty. With three miles of golden sandy beach and a good choice of shops, eateries, pubs and amenities, Hayle attracts visitors throughout the year. Stolls along this vast beach from Hayle River to Godrevy lighthouse are the perfect way to spend time here and for those looking for more adventure, there is a great choice of activities, including excellent surfing. Bird watchers too are drawn to Hayle by the sheltered estuary that attracts migratory birds.
