Hassocks

Hassocks is a small town on the South Downs in West Sussex, England, neighbouring the popular seaside resort of Brighton. Its name is likely to simply describe its location as tufts of grass grow in the fields around the town.

The area is believed to have been a point of accumulating nomadic populations as far back as the Stone Age, 20,000 years ago, eventually developing into an agricultural settlement. Numerous discoveries have been made in the Parklands area of the town of tools and dwellings, and an Iron Age fort is still evident on Wolstonbury Hill.

Landmarks of the area include the Clayton to Offham Escarpment — a Site of Special Scientific Interest consisting of chalk grassland habitat and woodland and scrub; and Butchers Wood, just south of the town, which is an ancient woodland of oak and hazel owned by the Woodland Trust.
