Harwich is one of the Haven port towns of England's East Coast in Essex, within commuting distance of London. Neighbouring towns include Felixstowe, Ipswich, and Colchester. Harwich is quite small but well known for its architectural heritage, with the entirety of the older part of the town having been designated a conservation area. The street plan, and a large number of its buildings are of medieval origin, though often hidden behind 18th century, or more modern facades.
The town is a natural harbour, at the estuaries of both the Stour and the Orwell, which has made it an obvious military and naval base, as is indicated in its name which derives from an Anglo-Saxon phrase referring to it as such. This strategic position, also made Harwich the target of William of Orrange in 1688, during his invasion of Britain.
Key historical features of the town include the High Lighthouse; the Treadwheel Crane; and the Electric Palace Cinema, which is one of only a few purpose-built cinemas to survive in its original state, complete with projection room. There are also a number of Victorian very attractive shop fronts that characterise the busy high street.
