Harrogate

Harrogate is a spa town in a picturesque region of North Yorkshire. Known also as Harrogate Spa, the town's moniker is Arx celebris fontibus, or "a citadel famous for its springs." High Harrogate and Low Harrogate were originally two separate settlements, but the discovery of the first mineral spring in 1571 set the president for an influx of wealthy visitors to the town. By the 17th century the benefits of the water, which is rich in iron and sulphur, were widely publicised and the town grew as an attractive and affluent tourist destination. In addition to its spa waters, the RHS Harlow Carr gardens and the Betty's Tearooms are also world famous visitor attractions. The town is also conveniently situated in the midst of countless idyllic towns and villages and is an ideal location from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The town is also known for its fine architecture and there are many listed buildings of interest throughout this essentially wealthy town, including a Grade II listed building designed by Frank Matcham and the Royal Hall theatre — the only surviving Kursaal in Britain. The Royal Hall is an important national heritage building and was reopened in 2008 by The Prince of Wales after a period of restoration work. The Royal Pump Room features Europe's strongest sulphur well, and is now a museum showcasing the town's spa history.
