Harrington is an attractive harbour town on the Cumbrian coast neighbouring Workington and Whitehaven. It was once an industrial town serving the mining and production industries of coal, steel and magnesium. As such it boasts very good transport links and is now a commuter town and a seaside base from which tourists can explore the local area; with ease of access to the Lake District National Park and the various sites and attractions of Cumbria as a whole.
The Distington to Workington West Cumbria Cycle Network passes through Harrington along the route of the former Cleator and Workington Junction Railway, making the town a very popular halfway point for cyclists to stop and find refreshment in one of the many local pubs or cafés. The scenic harbour has been renovated as a facility for leisure activities, and is now used by several watersports clubs.
Local attractions and sites of interest include the Harrington Nature Reserve; Workington Hall, where Queen Mary of Scots wrote to Queen Elizabeth I shortly before her imprisonment and subsequent execution; Gleaston Castle; and the sites and remains of the various ancient and Roman fortifications that once defended the whole of the Cumbrian coastline.
