Once a ‘new town’, Harlow is in the county of Essex and as it is in close proximity to London, falls in the commuter belt. The Harlow New Town was built after World War II to ease overcrowding in London and was one of several developments, including Basildon, Stevenage, and Hemel Hempstead. Designed by the world-renowned architect Sir Frederick Gibberd, Harlow is one of the original new towns; it has grown to become a vibrant community that delights both the resident and the visitor alike.
With busy shopping centres offering an array of choice, the Playhouse Theatre with events throughout the year, fascinating museum, varied music venues and leisure and cultural activities; Harlow has something for everyone. In the parks and surrounding countryside, visitors can enjoy a host of outdoor activities, including boating on the river and the huge variety of flora, fauna and wildlife at one of Harlow's many nature reserves.
