Hampton is an old village that became a suburban area on the River Thames, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The area at the heart of Hampton has a triangle of roads that served as the core of the ancient settlement here in the mid 16th century; much as they do today. The Anglo-Saxon ‘Hamptons’ of old comprised present-day Hampton, Hampton Hill, Hampton Wick and Hampton Court. It was in the 19th century that Hampton experienced significant growth and an increase in prosperity with the coming of the railways. Market gardening flourished in the 1880’s with 32 nurseries by 1900 and in 1897 the Earl of Carlisle broke up the Manor House Estate, releasing large areas of land for development.
Hampton has amenities, shops, restaurants, pubs and historic and cultural attractions as well as easy access, to the scenic country and river-side areas that surround it. The river has always been a key part of the heritage here and the large Water Treatment Works here is a marvel from the 1850’s. It was built in response to the 1852 Metropolis Water Act that made drinking water from the tidal Thames illegal because of sewage content. The Water Treatment Works, complete with Victorian structures, is next to the Sunnyside and Stain Hill Reservoirs that are sites of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation with a beautiful variety of flora, fauna, wildlife, grassland and habitats for water birds.
