Haltwhistle

Haltwhistle is a small and relatively rural town in the English county of Northumberland, located 10 miles to the east of Brampton, near Hadrian's Wall. The villages of Plenmeller, Rowfoot and Melkridge surround it. The town centre is characterised by a predominance of attractive stone-built houses, which together with its close proximity to the internationally famous landmark makes it a very popular tourist destination. Haltwhistle is one of two settlements which claim to be the exact geographic centre of Great Britain.

Haltwhistle is believed to have been in existence by the Roman era, because of its close proximity to Hadrian's Wall on the River South Tyne, while the old Roman road of Stanegate passes by to the north. A hoard of Roman coins was discovered by workmen in 1836 while quarrying stone on the top of a local high hill known as Boreum.
