Halton

Halton-with-Aughton are two villages on the bank of the River Lune in Lancaster, England. Named Halton-on-Lune and Aughton, Halton-on-Lune is the larger of the two, and is known commonly as simply Halton. Aughton is a hamlet that lies to Halton's east, which is best known for the Aughton Pudding. Baked in the village during a festival held only every 21 years, the pudding is said to be the largest in the world.

Combined the villages have a population of just over 2,000 people. Visitors to the villages might like to examine the Halton Cross, which is believed to have been carved by Norsemen more than 1,000 years ago and can be found in the churchyard of Saint Wilfrid's church.Another interesting feature of the village is the earthworks present on Halton's Castle Hill, which suggest that an 11th century Norman motte & bailey castle once stood on the site, which is now privately owned.
