The rural market town of Halstead in the county of Essex is situated in the beautiful Colne Valley and built its prosperity through weaving cloth and later, silk and crepe. The Courtauld Silk Weaving Mill was once the major employer here and only closed in 1982 after contributing much to the town; the Courtaulds built attractive structures here during the 19th and 20th; including industrial housing and the superb public gardens that opened in 1901. The history and heritage of Halstead is still very much in evidence in the town’s many historic buildings like the former Corn Exchange that is now the library, built in 1864 and the Cottage Hospital that was opened 1884.
The High Street’s historic buildings, particularly the 14th century church of St. Andrew that dominates it, create a unique atmosphere that is a pleasure to visit. With a choice of restaurants, bars and pubs as well as good shopping and cultural activities, Halstead has everything the visitor could want.
