The historic market town of Hailsham in the county of East Sussex has created its prosperity through a variety of means, from agriculture to the manufacture of rope. A market was started here in 1252 and continued until 1639, when it was discontinued for over 40 years. The market re-started in the late 1700's and continues to this day, with a focus on livestock as well as local produce and crafts. The manufacture of rope was started in Hailsham in 1780 by Thomas Burfield and during the 1800's a wide range of goods related to this industry were manufactured; including Hop Pockets for the brewing industry, cloths, twine, mill sails and whip cord as well as ropes for the navy.
Hailsham is surrounded by unspoilt views and beautifully located between the densely wooded hills of the southern Forest Ridge and the gently undulating chalk countryside of the South Downs. The market square remains the heart of this town centre that is a blend of old and new, with modern shopping precincts alongside the buildings of the past like St. Mary’s Church, Fleur de Lys and other buildings dating back to the 16th century.
