Guildford is the administrative centre and county town of Surrey, in England, just 27 miles from London.
The town is likely to be Saxon in origin and is situated in the North Downs , at a point where the River Wey is forded by the Harrow Way. The town became a Royal Mint in 978 and with the eventual construction of the Wey Navigation and Basingstoke Canal, Guildford became the central town of a network of waterways.
Guildford is home to a much disputed underground chamber, which appears to be the remaining portion of a medieval synagogue, decorated by ornate patterns and featuring an Everlasting Light, or Ner Tamid, and an alcove thought to have been the Holy Ark, Aron Kodesh. If true, the Guildford Synagogue is the oldest of its kind in Britain, and the only one like it in England. Unfortunately, the chamber is not open to the public, but artefacts and information can be seen at the Guildford Museum.
Other attractions and sites of interest in the Guildford area include: the Norman Guildford Castle, the River Wey and Wey Navigation canal, and the Guildford Cathedral.
