Greenock is a town in the scottish council area of Inverclyde, in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. It is a former burgh town within what used to be the county of Renfrewshire and a contiguous urban area with the neighbouring towns of Gourock, to the west, and Port Glasgow to the east, for which it serves as an administrative centre.
This is a relatively large town with a population of around 45,000 people that lies in a very scenic location on the south bank of the Clyde, a point known as "Tail of the Bank", which is where the River Clyde expands into the Firth of Clyde.
Greenock is notable as being the birthplace of revolutionary engineer James Watt, for whom the local college is named, which is built at the site where he was born, in William Street, which is marked by an impressive commemorative statue.
Popular attractions in the area include Geilston Garden, the Finlaystone Country Estate, Hill House, Denny Ship Model Experiment Tank, Vikingar, and the 18th century Weaver's Cottage, to name only a small selection.
