Great Missenden is a large English village in the Misbourne Valley within the Chiltern Hills Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in Buckinghamshire. This is a pretty location surrounded by traditional villages and countryside, yet still within commuting distance of the English capital.
The village is best known as home to the late Roald Dahl, the internationally famous children's author, who lived at Gipsy House until his death in 1990. A number of local sites and residents seem to have influenced his work. The author is buried at Saint Peter & Saint Paul's Church, where children visit and leave gifts and flowers at his resting place. Dahl's granddaughter, model and TV presenter Sophie Dahl, still lives in the village with her husband, jazz musician Jamie Cullum. The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre opened in Great Missenden in June 2005 to celebrate the life and works of Roald Dahl.
Author Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote the international children's classic Treasure Island, also lived in the village for a short time.
Other popular attractions in the area include Missenden Abbey, the walks and forts of the Chiltern Hills, Hartwell House, and Stowe Park, to name only a few.
