Great Dunmow

The small market town of Dunmow comprises Great Dunmow and it's near neighbour, Little Dunmow. Located in the county of Essex, the Dunmow was once a Roman settlement that went on to become a thriving town during the Middle Ages and an important market centre in the region. The town is also very well known for the ‘Dunmow Flitch Trials’ that started in Little Dunmow around 1120. Held every four years, married couples who can prove they have not quarrelled for a year, are given a side of bacon, a "flitch".  The couple is paraded through the High Street before receiving the flitch. You can explore more about this ritual and the local history at the 'Maltings Museum'.

Today the town is a traditional market town with good shopping, lovely historic buildings, a choice of pubs and bars, speciality shops, pretty architecture and the wealth of natural beauty and attractions in the surrounding Essex countryside.
