The large town of Grays Thurrock in the county of Essex is alongside the Thames, near the Dartford crossing. The Thurrock History Museum is a great place to explore the history of this area, going back over 250,000 years. The museum tells its story of mammoths from Aveley, the earliest known Thurrock coins dating to 75 BC, Roman Pottery, Saxon artefacts and medieval finds from Grays. More up to date history is here too with a poster advertising the wonderful moment when Hughie Green's ‘Opportunity Knocks’ was held in the Regal Cinema in Grays in 1949.
Visitors flock to the area to enjoy the large Lakeside Shopping Centre and retail park with its varied shops, cinemas, eateries and entertainment. As well as the town centre and Lakeside, the Thurrock Yacht Club and River Thames offer picturesque views, whilst Grays Beach children's playground takes care of the fun. Grays Beach is also home to ‘The Gull’, a lightship built in 1860.
