Gloucester

Gloucester, the county town of Gloucestershire, is a city of Roman origin, founded in AD 48 as Glevum. A few of the Roman artefacts found in the city are on display in a glass case on the high street. Gloucester is situated on the River Severn in the South West of England, close to the Welsh border and the Norman castle town of Chepstow. The city's main industry is in the financial and business services sector, and is the founding place of the Cheltenham & Gloucester bank. As such, the city boasts excellent shopping; with two dedicated shopping centres, the "Kings Walk Shopping Centre" and the "Gloucester Quays Outlet Centre", as well as a pedestrianised city centre. There is a good selection of both small independent shops and larger chains, as well as an indoor market, coffee shops, numerous restaurants, and traditional pubs. The Peel Centre also offers a large Toys 'R' Us, a Hobbycraft and a cinema.

Gloucester is a waterfront city and a port, because of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, which links Gloucester's docks to the Severn Estuary. The docks have undergone extensive renovation since the 1980s and are now a public space, housing the National Waterways Museum.

Gloucester Cathedral, located by the river, was built on the foundation of the Abbey of Saint Peter, in 681. King Edward II and Walter de Lacy are buried there. The cloisters of the cathedral were used as the film set for corridor scenes in the Harry Potter saga. The city features many medieval and Tudor gabled and timbered houses, as well as the "New Inn" public house on Northgate Street, which was built in 1450 to rest the pilgrims of King Edward II's shrine. The pub has large external galleries and courtyards.
