Glossop is a small market town within the Peak District of the county of Derbyshire, in a landscape sculpted by the Ice Age; ice carved valleys and boulders (Glacial Erratics) brought from the far north are here. Examples of these ancient boulders can be found at Howard Park and on the Pyegrove. Glossop grew to become a centre of wool processing and by the late 18th century, the town began to prosper, soon specialising in the production and printing of calico. A successful mill town, Glossop’s fortunes were reflected in its chapels and churches. Two of the cotton mills survive along with the Dinting railway viaduct.
Visitors to Glossop town centre will find plenty of shops, a Thursday and Saturday indoor market as well as an outdoor market Fridays and Saturdays, a choice of eateries and pubs as well as historic buildings and visitor attractions. The Glossop Heritage Centre on Henry Street tells the story of the past with exhibitions of local history, arts and crafts as well as industrial heritage. Lovely scenery surrounds Glossop and it you are looking for tranquillity and natural beauty, Manor Park offers 60 acres of gardens, woodlands and lakes as well as a host of activities.
