Gilsland

The small village of Gilsland in the picturesque county of Cumbria is on Hadrian's Wall and is steeped in the history of this fascinating area. Hadrian's Wall was constructed by the Roman army in the early 2^nd century and is a World Heritage Site. Prominent remains here attract visitors and the Wall itself of course is a popular visitor attraction that literally goes on for miles. The scenery around the village of Gilsland is spectacular with rivers, hills, dales and varied wildlife, flora and fauna.

This tranquil village is laced with popular public footpaths, cycle trails and bridleways, attracting visitors to the area throughout the year. There are plenty of amenities and shops, pubs and eateries both here and in the nearby towns and villages as well as historic buildings and sites of interest. The church of St, Mary Magdalene is built in Early English style and partially endowed by George Gill Mounsey who also erected the building that became the Gilsland Spa Hotel, just north of the village. The Gilsland Spa Hotel was originally known as the Shaws.
