Gilcrux

Gilcrux is a small village in West Cumbria, near the River Derwent, in England, which was once part of the Cockermouth Rural District but is now part of the district of Allerdale. The village provides a very pretty and tranquil vantage point from which to explore the best of this famously scenic region of North West England. There are a good number of hotels, guest houses and caravan sites locally, along with numerous attractions including Isel Hall, Mirehouse, and the Senhouse Roman Museum.

Isel Hall is an Elizabethan Range and fortified Pele Tower magnificently situated above the River Derwent. It features formal gardens and views of the 11th Century Church of Gilcrux and Skiddaw. Experienced guides provide tours of the main rooms of the house, which is still occupied, to view the various antiques, paintings and textiles of historical and artistic interest.

The Senhouse Roman Museum, next to the Roman Fort of Alauna at Maryport, contains sculpture and inscriptions of the fort, among other extentive collections.

Mirehouse is 17th century in origin. It boasts strong links to Tennyson, Wordsworth and Southey, while providing an excellent family day out along a popular lakeside walk.
