Galashiels

Galashiels is a burgh town in the Scottish Borders. It is situated on the Gala Water river, within the boundaries of the former council area of Roxburghshire. The name Galashields is generally shortened to "Gala" locally. The town is a major commercial centre and communication link for the Scottish Borders. The town is known for the nearby ancient earthwork known as the "Picts' Work Ditch" or "Catrail", which extends for miles to the south, and for an Iron Age hill fort on the edge of the town.

The home of Sir Walter Scott, Abbotsford, is just across the River Tweed from Galashiels, and the Sir Walter Scott Way long-distance path from Moffat to Cockburnspath passes through the town; as does the Black Path, which includes some significant geological features before joining the Southern Upland Way
