Gainsborough is a town in the English county of Lincolnshire, situated on the River Trent. The town could potentially have become the English capital, as the site chosen by the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard, had he not died only weeks later. Nevertheless, Gainsborough had been one of the capital cities of Mercia during the Anglo-Saxon period, and continued to thrive as an administrative centre and an important inland port located 55 miles from the North Sea — the furthest port from a coast in England. The river banks have recently been renovated to provide a scenic seating area that appeals to the town's residents and to tourists.
The town offers an excellent vantage point from which to enjoy the sites and attractions of Lincolnshire, with good shopping prospects, various entertainment venues and a good choice of quality holiday accommodation. Its main attractions are the 16th century Gainsborough Old Hall, and Gainsborough Castle, while popular attractions in the wider area include Bourne Abbey, Lincoln Castle, Lincoln Cathedral, Thornton Abbey, and Natureland Seal Sanctuary, to name only a handful.
